Menstruation is a physiological event, but may become a critical condition in some women with heavy menstrual bleeding (HMB). In fact, iron deficiency anemia (IDA) is a clinical consequence which is associated with a series of symptoms affecting the quality of life of these patients. Uterine fibroids, adenomyosis and endometrial disorders (polyps, hyperplasia) may be the causes of HMB and a differential diagnosis by clinical and radiological approaches must be done. Multiple are the therapeutic options (medical and surgical) targeted for reducing HMB and for restoring the iron deficiency. A particular attention must be given to the IDA for a periconceptional care when a pregnancy is planned. The correct management of HMB and IDA will improve the quality of life of these patients.
